Our Programmes

Ten programmes carry the seven goals of our 2022–2027 strategic workplan into schools, health facilities, youth groups, households and community meetings.

Human Rights & Social Accountability

We build awareness of human rights inside and outside the community, and provide a platform where young people can discuss the issues that shape development at district, national and regional level.

  • Promoting laws and policies that protect the wellbeing of young people
  • Involving youth in decision-making on the issues that affect them
  • Strengthening crime prevention and fair, accountable criminal justice
  • Working to end harmful practices, female genital mutilation, and sex and human trafficking

Girls’ Education & Protection

Girls’ education sits at the centre of our work. We support girls to stay in school and to reach their full potential through education, advocacy, lobbying and influencing the policies that shape their lives.

  • Girls Talk programming with sub-county and district leaders
  • Girl retention programming and support with scholastic materials
  • Leadership training and mentorship for adolescent girls and boys
  • Defending girls’ rights to health and education

Child Marriage Prevention

We work to end child marriage and teenage pregnancy by amplifying the voices of girls at risk and by raising awareness of the harm child marriage causes.

  • Encouraging open, inclusive and informed discussion locally and internationally
  • Facilitating learning and coordination between organisations working to end child marriage
  • Mobilising the policy, financial and other support needed to end the practice
  • Creating opportunities for girls at risk to continue their education

Gender-Based Violence Prevention

KSSC runs gender-based violence interventions at grassroots level, including in fish landing sites, areas around national parks and refugee settlement communities, under a healthy living approach for a healthy young generation.

  • Reducing gender-based violence among girls and young women
  • Engaging boys and young men as part of an inclusive intervention
  • Challenging practices and systems that increase the vulnerability of women and girls
  • Connecting survivors to services through community referral networks

Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights

KSSC runs a programme in which young people come forward to share experiences, learn, and be trained by advocates and ambassadors on sexuality education, sexual rights and related health issues.

  • Advocating for gender-responsive budgeting that improves youth-friendly health services
  • Supporting effective implementation of the sexuality education framework for teachers, health workers and social workers
  • Creating awareness of comprehensive sexuality education and improving access to services
  • Tracking regional and national progress on the relevant Sustainable Development Goals

Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy

We create a platform for young people who are already in business and for those who want to become job creators, and a place that provides the socialisation space young people need to share experiences and build social awareness.

  • Entrepreneurship training from developing a business idea and plan through to completion
  • Training in innovation management, income-generating activities and livelihood skills
  • Financial literacy knowledge to support informed decisions and financial independence
  • Young mentors supporting other young people in the same line of business

Youth Leadership & Participation

KSSC creates space for adolescents and young people to reshape, redirect and uphold the values of social transformative leadership, and to take part meaningfully in every sphere of decision-making.

  • Youth participatory activities: debates, dialogues, meetings and workshops
  • Alternative and transformative leadership training
  • Building risk and protection measures for vulnerable young people
  • Training champions and mentors who raise awareness in their own communities

Climate Justice & Environmental Conservation

Climate change carries long-lasting social, cultural, economic and political consequences for whole societies, young people included. KSSC works to put young people, women and girls at the centre of the response.

  • Teaching climate justice among young people
  • Advocating for environmental, social and biodegradable products, and green-based technologies
  • Using digital technology and media to create awareness
  • Advocating for equal representation and participation by women and girls in climate negotiations

WASH, Menstrual Health & Hygiene

Lack of access to sanitary materials keeps girls out of school. Managing menstruation without support can cost a girl four to five school days a month, and eventually her place in education altogether.

  • Promoting menstrual health, hygiene and sanitation management
  • Promoting water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes
  • Addressing the barriers that keep girls out of class during menstruation
  • Linking menstrual health to girls’ wider education and health rights

Community Advocacy & Policy Engagement

KSSC helps coordinate, associate and partner with other organisations so that young people’s numbers translate into influence, from the grassroots to the national level.

  • Identifying, mapping and profiling partners, stakeholders and youth organisations
  • Community dialogues that hold government programmes to the needs of girls and young women
  • Monitoring and tracking the progress of government programmes in the districts where we work
  • Advocating for increased budget allocation for youth-friendly services
